Hybrid Home: Construction Photos
Our timber frame hybrid home in Candia, NH continues construction! Here are some newest photos:
NH Architect Jeremy Bonin designed this hybrid home with several building materials: The center section of the hybrid home is timber frame and SIP panels. The Master Bedroom has timber rafters with SIP panel walls, roof, dormers. The Master Bedroom connector: SIP panel walls with conventional roof, while the garage utilizes conventional 2x material with batt insulation. Stay tuned for photos as they are available!

Hybrid Timber Frame: Construction Photos
Our hybrid home in southern New Hampshire designed by Timber Frame Architect Jeremy Bonin is continuing construction, especially with our burst of spring weather. The timber frame was delivered and is already up! Here are some construction photos of the progress:

The Master Bedroom connector will be built using conventional 2x framing, SIP panel walls, and a conventional roof system. The Master Bedroom will have a cathedral ceiling with timber frame rafters, SIP panel walls, dormers and roof system.

The post and girder are joined by an exposed spline connection. Notice the floor joists have an attractive scalloped end detail. Check back for more pictures as they are available!

Timber Frame Design
Timber frame designs, including schematic drawings and renderings, help visualize what the inside of certain areas of a timber frame home will look like.




The one story home design below will have a timber frame roof system with SIP panel walls and roof, which wrap around the timber frame to create a high performance energy efficient thermal envelope and leave the beautiful timbers exposed to the interior.

Color renderings with foliage and landscaping bring the elevations to life and demonstrate the various approaches to the home.

One Story House Plans Update
The current design is 2158 square feet (not including the garage) for this one story home. A practical air-lock gable foyer entrance will reduce the amount of cold winter air that is let in the home. Large overhangs and energy efficient windows will help the home stay cool in summer by reducing solar glare. When we move from the home design development stage into the construction phase, the floor plans will be finalized and material specifications compiled for bids. In the meantime, final revisions are being made to the plan to meet the homeowners’ needs.
The home was originally to be built with conventional 2x building material, but after hearing the many benefits of structural insulated panels, the homeowners changed their minds to include SIPs for the walls and roof. Some of the features and benefits of SIPs are:
- Reduced energy costs (50%-60% less per year when combined with other high performance building systems)
- Healthy living environment
- Reduced construction site waste
- Design flexibility
- Fast installation and reduced labor costs
- Finish-ready exterior
- Superior strength to meet wind and snow loads.
The design has plenty of storage space in all areas of the home, including the laundry / pantry, a generous walk-in closet in the Master Bedroom suite, and more storage space in the mechanical room in the garage.

The homeowners’ focus on energy efficiency doesn’t stop with a high performance insulation system. In addition to solar options and a Tulikivi masonry stove, they are considering geothermal heating system, and a future wind turbine!

Hybrid home: Timber Frame and SIP Panels
Hybrid homes combining timber framing and other building materials are very popular. There are many ways to combine construction methods. For instance, this 2745 square foot home design is an excellent example of a hybrid home. - The center section is 1316 square feet of timber frame construction, 836 square feet for the first floor great room, kitchen and dining, and 480 square feet in the second floor loft;
- The entry will utilize a timber frame roof system with insulated panel walls and roof system;
- SIP panel walls and a conventional roof system will be used in the Master Bedroom connector;
- Timber frame rafters, SIP panel walls, roof, and panel dormers will be used in the Master Bedroom; and
- The 576 square foot garage consists of conventional 2x framing and batt insulation.
A hybrid home, combining timber framing, conventional framing, and SIP panels, might better fit your family’s needs – and budget.
If budget is a concern, consider combining building methods; i.e. use timber framing in public areas (great room, dining room, and kitchen) and use SIP panel construction or conventional material in other areas can reduce the overall square foot cost of the home.
