Award-Winning Cottage Featured in Cabin Life

Check out the latest issue of Cabin Life magazine!

Bonin Architects’ award-winning lakeside cottage is the cover story of the May 2012 issue.  The article titled “Mini Retreat, Maximum Fun” describes how our remodeled cottage reuses as much of the original material as possible, makes the most out of  layout and storage, and creates an ultra-fun spot for entertaining guests on beautiful Pleasant Lake in New London, NH.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

The beach cabin was in good shape for its age, but dark and rough inside. The goal was to maximize space, natural light and lake vistas. “We had very specific things we wanted to do,” says Sheri, a former property manager whose experience with architects, landscapers, and tradesmen came in handy during the project. “That’s the fun of having a cabin – you fix it up and make it your own.”

She found inspiration in books and magazines – Cabin Life included – on cabin design and lakefront living. The Webers brought the stack to architect Jeremy Bonin, AIA, of New London, N.H., who distilled common themes from pages of images. On the wish list: a cathedral ceiling, French doors, lots of glass, and a screened back porch facing the lake.

Lots of open storage was another must. Builder Jay Tucker of Old Hampshire Designs in New London was called in to do the revamping. Old Hampshire sanded floors, opened the ceiling, and created built-in nooks and cubbies. “It’s still all exposed wood inside, like a beach house,” says Tucker. “We upgraded it, painted it, made it a pretty little living space.”

“We tried to use as much of the original materials as possible,” notes Bonin. “We turned casement windows on their sides, reframed and regrouped others.” Bonin also guided the couple through a maze of required permits, as the cabin is just 50 feet from the water.

Bonin Architects Wins Two AIANH Excellence in Architecture Design Awards

We were pleasantly surprised Saturday night at the AIANH Excellence in Architecture Award ceremony when our Lakefront Cottage Renovation project won TWO Awards:  The Merit Award and the People’s Choice Award in Residential Architecture!

Entries were judged on overall design excellence including aesthetics, clarity, creativity, appropriate functionality, sustainability, building performance, and appropriateness with regard to fulfilling the client's program. The entries were also previewed in the January/February 2011 issue of NH Home Magazine.  Winning entries will be featured in a future issue.

Residential Architecture: Lakefront Cottage Renovation
Architect: Jeremy Bonin, Bonin Architects & Associates
Merit Award and People’s Choice Award, Residential Architecture

Project Description:
Originally one of eleven cabins on “The Point”, the recently subdivided property left this and one other cabin in close proximity to the beautiful beach and lake. Removal of the ‘point’ cabin allowed for a meandering path from renovated cottage to the dock as well as substantially opening the view to the lake from the remaining cabin.

A newly exposed cathedral ceiling is warm and inviting as are the reused and repositioned windows and doors for capturing lakeside views and breezes. Salvaged and refinished from the cottage are framing lumber, T&G boards and floors. Finishes and materials are low or no VOC products and even the woodstove is a found item making a new home in this beautiful location.

With material reuse and minimal site impact as two principal goals throughout the design and renovation process, the resultant cabin provides for three seasons of comfortable lakefront access and family gatherings.

The 2011 jury was comprised of representatives from the State of Maine’s architecture community: James A. Sterling, AIA, Portland; Ellen Belknap, AIA, SMRT Architects, Portland; and Walter Arsenault, AIA, Fraser Matson Architecture & Planning, Falmouth.

Juror Comments: “Understated, simple, cost effective renovation. Excellent use of limited space. Restrained and authentic in use of materials and details. In some ways, this is the most appealing project …. maybe it speaks to the desire for simplicity in all of us.”

Timber Home Wins Dream Home Award

The 2010 Dream Home Awards recently awarded 33 builders, architects, designers, developers and tradesmen from across the nation for their excellence in a variety of areas.

Award categories included Historic Renovation of the Year, Conceptual Projects, Community of the Year and Best Green Home Project and were judged on Unusual or Creative Architectural Design Elements, Creative Site Solutions, and Exterior and Interior Appeal.

Our Lincoln, New Hampshire timber home won a Silver Award in the Custom Vacation Home category.

This 4800 square foot home was designed by timber frame architect Jeremy Bonin within strict Architectural Review Board guidelines which dictated architectural style, building height, setbacks, exterior materials, and color schemes. The small, ½ acre corner lot restricted onsite material storage. Pre-built Structural Insulated Panels were used for their energy efficiency and fast installation time (providing a weather-tight shell in just two weeks), allowing the site to be kept free from materials being stored long-term throughout the construction process.

Bonin Architects, along with 31 other talent professionals, were awarded for their outstanding work based on factors such as quality of design, livability, sustainability and the ability to provide healthy and nurturing environments for consumers. Dream Home Awards aims to assist and encourage building industry leaders to develop innovative homes and products.
